Any biomedical science Ph.D. student may add the translational focus to their degree program.

Declare the translational focus

The student should:

  • Notify their primary mentor of the desire to join the translational focus before beginning the dissertation phase. The mentor must agree that the stipend will cover the additional coursework.
  • Work with the primary basic science mentor to identify an additional “clinical mentor.”
  • Inform your graduate program coordinator of your interest.

Complete the translational coursework

  • Attend three grand rounds lectures related to the field of the dissertation. The student should obtain written approval from course coordinators to attend the lectures and share it with the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS).
  • EPH 621: Fundamentals of Epidemiology OR EPH 604: Clinical Trials (EPH 604 prerequisite is EPH 602).
  • Attend a workshop on IRB protocol preparation, one day, no credit. Share proof of attendance with OGS. Or attend the Career Development Seminar series (jointly run by MVSIO and TT program) coordinated by Dr. Bhattacharya. Proof of attendance of any three seminars.
  • Attend seminars of Clinical and Translational Research, CTI 605, or History of Science and Steps Towards the Translation of Therapeutics, OPH691. Share proof of attendance with OGS.

Dissertation Requirements

  • Dissertation must contain at least one “translational” specific aim.
  • Dissertation committee must have at least one member involved in translational research.

Progress Tracking

  • OGS monitors student progress through the translational focus. Students must send updates on their progress to pibs@miami.edu.
