This course introduces the scientific, socio-ethical, and policy issues arising in genomic medicine. It helps students improve critical thinking and provides the tools to evaluate the wide range of challenges genomic medicine brings to individuals and societies. The course covers a broad spectrum of topics –from the history of eugenics to genetic testing and screening through the life cycle (e.g., pre-implantation and pre-natal testing, newborn, population and carrier screening, and direct-to-consumer genetic testing), bioethical issues (e.g., informed consent, privacy, and confidentiality), policy issues (e.g., professional duties, patents, and discrimination), and societal issues (e.g., health disparities).
