Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D.)

Qualifications

Candidates are reviewed holistically and all aspects of the application are considered.

Important criteria are:

  • Significant research experience(s)
  • Letters of recommendation from research mentors who can attest to your potential for a career as a physician-scientist
  • M.D./Ph.D. Essay (Reason for applying to M.D./Ph.D. programs, evidence of a passion for the physician-scientist path, and a career involving research.)
  • Coursework, GPA, and MCAT**
  • Meaningful patient contact experiences
  • Life experiences and extracurricular activities
  • Character: maturity, integrity, resilience, creativity, etc.
  • Leadership and communication
  • Interviews

Other important information

Applicants must fulfill the academic requirements of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Florida residency is not required for admission to the Miller School M.D./Ph.D. Program.

**Academics, grades, and MCAT scores constitute just one of several criteria considered by the MSTP admissions committee.  Applicants interviewed for the program in the last four years had composite MCAT scores ranging from 60% to 100% and undergraduate GPAs from 3.1 to 4.0.
