Admission to the M.D./Ph.D Program is highly competitive and interested applicants are advised to apply by early fall. All applicants must fulfill the academic requirements of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Please be sure to visit Medicine Admissions for more information.

Primary Application

The primary application is made through the American Medical College Admissions Services (AMCAS). Indicate that you want your application sent to the Miller School and designate that you are applying to the M.D./Ph.D. Program. You will be asked to fill out three essays as an M.D./Ph.D. applicant:
  • Personal Comments Essay
  • M.D./Ph.D. Essay
  • Significant Research Experience Essay

Secondary Application

Applicants meeting qualifications for further consideration will be given instructions for completing the Miller School's secondary application. This includes:

  • Medical School Secondary application
  • M.D./Ph.D. Secondary Application
  • Passport-sized photo of yourself
  • CASPer test
  • Letters of Recommendation

Secondary Application Fee Assistance

The Miller School will waive the secondary application fee for any candidate approved for the AAMC Fee Assistance Program (FAP). In addition, we will consider, on a case-by-case basis, other requests for waiver of the Secondary Application Fee. Please contact medical admissions and the MSTP program for more information.

Letters of Recommendation

Among your letters of recommendation, a minimum of two must be from scientists who specifically address your potential for a career as a physician-scientist. At least one of your letters must come from a prior or current research mentor. Composite premed evaluations will not be accepted in place of letters. Letters of recommendation should be submitted through AMCAS.

All other supporting documents or updates, such as scientific publications, presentations, awards, etc., can be mailed to the MSTP Office (mstp@miami.edu). The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for application or matriculation to the MSTP.

Interviews

After a review of completed applications, selected candidates are invited to interview. MSTP interviews are conducted virtually. You will be interviewed by both the medical school and MSTP admissions. In addition, you can meet with selected faculty in your areas of research interest. Interview days also include overviews of the medical and MSTP programs, virtual campus tours, and interactions with current MSTP students.

While applicants will meet with both programs, it is important to note M.D. and M.D./Ph.D. interviews will occur on different days. Additional details will be provided at the time the interview invitation is extended.

In March or April, accepted candidates are invited to campus for an in-person visit to see Miami and the UMMSM firsthand.

Admissions Decisions

Acceptances are generally made on a rolling basis, but many alternate list candidates receive offers later in the admissions process. The medical school and MSTP follow the AAMC Application and Acceptance Protocols, also called Traffic Rules. All candidates are expected to follow these protocols and deadlines.

On-Campus Visit

If you are offered an acceptance to the Miller School's M.D./Ph.D. program, you will be invited back to Miami for an on-campus visit. Candidates have the opportunity to meet additional faculty and students and learn more about living in Miami.
