External Financial Opportunities

Student Resources
Extramural grants, fellowships, and scholarships are merit-based support provided by external nation, international, or private foundations. Their purpose is to support a graduate student’s research in a specific field to advance work on a current topic.

These funding sources are essential to a graduate student’s academic and professional development. It allows them to gain the financial means necessary to complete their research goals and looks good on a C.V./Resume for future employment.

Graduate students need to understand the competitive nature of obtaining an extramural fellowship and be aware of the various options and deadlines. Below, we provide links to key search databases and significant funding sources common to graduate students.

Fellowship Search Databases

These online databases provide different ways to search for extramural fellowships that are specific to the student’s research/goals.
  • Grants.gov (US Department of Health and Human Services)
  • Grant Forward (requires a paid subscription, but offers a free trial)

Major Funders

Government agencies (such as NSF and the Department of Homeland Security) run large fellowship programs. The following organizations have previously provided funding for our graduate students.

There are extramural fellowships to specific populations, including U.S. citizens, international students, minority students, and students in particular research fields.

Although these online resources are a great place to start searching for your extramural fellowship, having a conversation with your mentor or other faculty members in your program is a great place to start.
