Application Process

Applicants must maintain a full-time position in industry or other laboratories involved in research at their workplace. Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in a biological or related discipline (e.g., psychology, chemistry, engineering, or physics). Although there are no required prerequisites, courses in general biology, cell/molecular biology, calculus, general physics, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry are encouraged. Applicants with a master’s degree may be eligible for a waiver of select requirements.

Competitive candidates will have the following:

• Excellent academic record (minimum overall cumulative GPA = 3.0)
• Full-time position in an industrial, government or academic institution
• Access to a laboratory and its resources to pursue Ph.D. level science
• Letter of support from an employer
• Strong letters of recommendation from scientists who know the candidate well in a research setting
• Motivation to pursue state-of-the-art biomedical research

BioMed Centralized Application Service (BioMedCAS) welcomes applicants to use a single online application and one set of materials to apply to multiple biomedical science programs at participating schools. All applicants to our PhDs in Biomedical Science must apply online through BioMedCAS.

BioMedCAS charges an $86 processing fee. Please note that application fees are non-refundable.

ALL official academic records from all previously attended colleges and universities must be sent electronically from each institution to BioMedCAS. This requirement includes the following: degree programs, non-degree programs, community college, and English language programs.

Note that applicants with Canadian transcripts with French language or grading systems should follow the international transcript instructions below.

Electronic transcripts are required. Follow the BioMedCAS instructions for submitting your transcripts through Credential Solutions, Parchment, or National Student Clearinghouse.

Applicants who have attended institutions outside of the US are required to submit all official transcripts, mark sheets, and a photocopy of their diploma(s) (with English translation when applicable). All post-secondary / university transcripts must be submitted with a course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA from the World Education Service using the special WES CAS website at wes.org/cas. Follow the instructions on the WES website, specifically for BioMedCAS. You will be guided to special directions for each country. Your evaluation will be electronically sent to BioMedCAS.

Official transcripts with translation and credential evaluation must be received before an application will be reviewed.

International students whose native language is not English are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. This requirement is waived for applicants who have completed 30 consecutive credits at the university level, where English was the language of instruction or those who have passed the USMLEs. Test scores must be less than two years old.

TOEFL: When registering for the test, please request that your score be sent to BioMedCAS, institution code 5815. The minimum score is 80.

IELTS: When registering for the test, please request that your score be sent to the University of Miami, institution code 4862. The minimum score is 6.5.

Your personal essay is intended to give you the opportunity to submit a narrative discussing your past education, experience, and current professional career objectives. Your statement of purpose should describe your:

• Reasons for interest in your application degree
• Your specific area(s) of research/professional interest in your application degree

Your research proposal is used to assign you to a full-time Biochemistry and Molecular Biology professor that is the best fit to guide you in that specific area of research.

All applicants must submit a complete, up-to-date resume/CV that includes all employment, research experience, community service, education, and academic or professional honors. Be sure to detail all experience related to the discipline you are applying to, including research experience, training, education, or other related qualifications, with bulleted summaries.

All applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation from those who are best able to assess your ability to be successful in a graduate degree program. Ideally, your recommenders are recent researchers or employers in related research or scientific field. Applicants should request that their recommender write a letter that is specific to the discipline for which they are applying. Form letters and recommendations written for medical school applications contribute little to your application and are strongly discouraged.

You will be asked for your recommenders’ contact information in BioMedCAS. They will be sent an online form to complete via email. Applicants must submit a minimum of three to a maximum of five recommendations.

All applicants are required to supply a letter of support from their employer acknowledging the student will be using laboratory time and resources to complete required research for the program. This letter should also acknowledge that the applicant may need to request time away from their full-time position to attend program-related tasks on campus. Although not required, financial support from your employer is encouraged.
