Other Summer Programs

This program is open to underrepresented minority and women students in the University of Miami’s (UM) College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) who:

• Have completed at least their sophomore year 
• Are U.S. citizens or permanent residents
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.0

Program participants conduct research with a university faculty mentor for ten weeks during the summer. The program provides housing and a stipend of $5,000. Students attend weekly professional development meetings with the program director and participate in cultural activities on some weekends. At the end of the program, all participants are required to give an oral presentation of their work and submit a research paper.

The CATCH Program integrates classroom lectures with visual applications for high school students and teachers. It offers an opportunity to explain complex physical and chemical concepts – such as 3D structures, reaction mechanisms, and ligand-protein interactions – through visualization tools. These graphical tools help students understand complex concepts and introduce them to an exciting interdisciplinary field that combines physics, chemistry/biochemistry, and computer science.

The eight-week, paid JJ Vance Memorial Internship Program is awarded to outstanding juniors in good standing from Miami- and Broward-area high schools. Internship recipients have the opportunity to participate in a challenging research course at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Interns are paired with an HIHG staff member, postdoc, or faculty member as they take part in research activities.

The program was established by family and friends of JJ Vance, who was a student at East Chapel Hill High School in North Carolina at the time of his death. After JJ died, HIHG Director Dr. Margaret A. Pericak-Vance; her husband, Dr. Jeffery M. Vance; and their daughter, Dr. Danica Vance received more than 300 letters from people who knew JJ. The letters recounted JJ’s acts of kindness, his passion for life, and his fundamental belief to help those around him. Heartened by the public response to JJ’s death and committed to celebrating his life, the Vance family created the JJ Vance Foundation a few months after JJ’s death.

Lois Pope, a University of Miami trustee, made a generous endowment that allows undergraduate neuroscience majors to participate in summer neuroscience research projects at the university. Participants work 40 hours a week for at least 10 weeks on neuroscience research, and they present their findings at the UM Research, Creativity, and Innovation Forum held during the following spring semester (students must have at least two more semesters before graduation to participate).

Participants may also take part in the PRIME Program as PRIME adjuncts and attend special activities related to other summer research programs, such as the Dean’s Women and Minority Research Program and the Honors Research Program.

The Miami Model Summer program is designed to help students from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds. Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a 8 week program that helps premedical students prepare for the MCAT. The Minority Students in Health Career Motivation Program (MSHCMP) is a 7-week program that helps students develop skills that will increase their competitiveness for admission to schools of medicine, and High School Careers in Medicine Workshop (HSCMW) is a 7-week program designed to promote interest in the health sciences among rising high school seniors with opportunity to engage and focus on instruction with academic and college counseling, and mentoring.

The PRIME program is a 10-week summer research program designed for students who intend to apply to Ph.D. programs.  Participants are required to work 20 hours a week on psychological research under the direction of a psychology faculty member.  They also attend weekly seminars where they discuss their research projects, research ethics and protocol, post-graduation plans, guidelines for poster presentations, and several other topics, and they must showcase their research projects at poster presentation. These students are also expected to present their findings at the UM Research, Creativity, and Innovation Forum, which is held during the following spring semester (students must have at least two more semesters before graduation).

The REU program provides underrepresented students with 10 weeks of highly integrated research projects and professional development activities, with at least two mentors for chemistry or bioscience disciplines.
