The University of Miami Department of Neurology condemns racism and all other forms of social injustice. Since George Floyd was publicly killed by police officers in Minneapolis last week, our community and our country have been stricken with pain, fear, anger, hopelessness and a host of difficult emotions regarding the social injustice that continues to pervade our society. We are deeply saddened by the senseless loss of yet another Black life, one of many in the history of systemic racism and social inequality that is rooted in our country’s past.
Furthermore, these events take place under already challenging times, as we have all adjusted to a “new normal” during the COVID-19 pandemic, a pandemic which has also highlighted the socioeconomic inequalities and healthcare disparities that disproportionately affect people of color.
As we navigate these challenges, we wanted to highlight important steps our department is taking to be part of the change we want to see in our community.
