Education

Neurocritical Care Division
Welcome to the Miami Neurocritical Care fellowship. We have a comprehensive clinical and academic fellowship training program that benefits from two units with differing populations that broadly span both surgical and medical Neurocritical Care. Our team has five full-time academic neurointensivists dedicated to training our fellows and preparing them to manage all aspects of critical care in patients with acute nervous system failure. We are fortunate to live and work in beautiful Miami, providing us with many options for time spent outside the ICU. Outdoor recreational activities are available year-round and Miami is a thriving city with multicultural influences shaping the music, food, and art scene here.
While at work, our fellows get trained in various procedures, including vascular access, endotracheal intubation, percutaneous tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and thoracostomy. Multimodality monitoring, including continuous EEG (including quantitative EEG), depth electrodes, intracranial pressure monitoring, brain tissue oxygen monitoring, and cerebral microdialysis, are also used. Fellows participate in clinical research projects and scholarly writing and have six months of non-NeuroICU time each year to acquire broad academic critical care experience. Scheduled conferences include grand rounds, didactic Neurocritical care lectures, vascular conference, case reviews, and ICU-EEG conferences. Finally, we strive to create a positive working environment inside and outside the hospital to help our fellows learn as much as possible while enjoying their time here with us.
