Education

Neurocritical Care Division
Welcome to the Miami Neurocritical Care fellowship. The Neurocritical Care fellowship at University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospitals is a two-year training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

We have a comprehensive clinical and academic fellowship training program with the benefit of having two neurointensive care units. The Neurocritical Care Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital is a 27-bed unit equipped with multimodality intracranial monitoring capabilities (intracranial pressure monitoring, brain tissue oxygen monitoring, cerebral microdialysis and depth electrodes), continuous EEG (including quantitative EEG) and advanced neuroimaging. Fellows will gain exposure to a wide variety of patient pathologies including severe traumatic brain injury, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute spinal cord injury, status epilepticus, intracerebral hemorrhage, stroke, and meningitis/encephalitis. The University of Miami Hospital Neuro ICU is an 8-bed unit providing care patients with a variety of pathologies including neuro-oncological, stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage and status epilepticus.

Fellow will develop proficiency in caring for critically ill patients with a breadth of neurologic conditions. Our team has six  full-time academic neurointensivists dedicated to training our fellows and preparing them to manage all aspects of critical care in the neurologic patient. Fellows will gain expertise in a variety of procedures including central and arterial lines, endotracheal intubation, percutaneous tracheostomy, percutaneous ultrasound gastrostomy, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis/thoracostomy, and paracentesis.

We are fortunate to live and work in beautiful Miami, providing us with many options for time spent outside the ICU. Outdoor recreational activities are available year-round and Miami is a thriving city with multicultural influences shaping the music, food, and art scene.

Program Details

Number of fellows per year: Average of 2-3 per year, 5 total.

We offer a 24-month training curriculum for those who have completed a residency in Neurology, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine or Internal Medicine.

We also offer a 12-month training curriculum for those who have prior critical care training, i.e. completion of a fellowship in anesthesiology critical care, internal medicine critical care, pediatric critical care or surgical critical care, or after completion of a neurosurgical residency program.

Fellows complete six months of Neuro ICU per year and have six months of non-Neuro ICU rotations each year to acquire broad academic critical care training. Rotations include Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, CVICU, and Trauma ICU, as well as non-ICU rotations including transcranial doppler, continuous EEG and dedicated research time.

Fellows will participate in didactics including teaching conferences, journal club, morbidity and mortality conference, and simulations. Scheduled conferences include grand rounds, didactic Neurocritical care lectures, vascular conference, case reviews, and ICU-EEG conferences. In addition, fellows participate in independent clinical research projects and scholarly writing. Fellows gain exposure to and participate in study recruitment for several actively recruiting research studies in our unit. Our diverse faculty provides mentorship in clinical research and other academic endeavors such as in projects in medical education and quality improvement.
