Headache Medicine Fellowship

The Headache fellowship offered at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine under the Department of Neurology, is accredited by the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS). The headache program includes clinical as well as didactic training in the diagnosis and comprehensive management of primary and secondary headache disorders, both in adults and children. The program aims to train future leaders in headache medicine for successful careers in academic, research, or private practice positions. Upon successful completion of the program, fellows are prepared for independent practice and eligible for UCNS certification.

Opportunities and Requirements

The University of Miami is one of the largest academic institutions and tertiary referral centers in the country. The infrastructure supports coordinated headache care and research. Clinics in the Institute for Advanced Pain Management provide state-of-the-art multidisciplinary clinical support to optimize complex headache conditions. Clinical conferences and multidisciplinary meetings provide advanced understanding in the management of primary and secondary headache disorders. Conference attendance and participation is expected and are to teach medical students, residents, and rotating pain fellows. Fellows can participate in scholarly activities and participate in mentored research. Interested candidates must be eligible to apply for a full Florida Medical license and have trained in an ACGME-accredited Neurology Residency program.

Services

Fellows are expected to gain proficiency in headache management through mentored patient care in both outpatient and inpatient settings. An office-based outpatient infusion center provides an opportunity to gain expertise in the acute care of refractory headache. Mastery in performing nerve blocks and neurotoxin injections will be gained during procedure clinics. Fellows may advance their understanding of interdisciplinary clinical aspects of headache during elective service time.
