Our stroke neurologists also provide consultation services in our UHealth Neurology Outpatient Clinic and utilize our Neurovascular Laboratory, an IAC-certified facility, to offer state of the art non-invasive diagnostic options such as extra cranial Duplex, transcranial Doppler, emboli detection studies, vasomotor reactivity evaluation, and non-invasive right to left shunt detection.
The Stroke faculty conducts cutting edge research to address a variety of cerebrovascular diseases. The division is actively enrolling patients in acute stroke treatment, stroke prevention and stroke recovery trials, and has special interest in stroke in minorities. The division is one of the 25 regional stroke centers for the NINDS Stroke Trials Network.
Training the next generation of stroke specialists is an important mission of the Stroke Division. Three ACGME accredited Vascular Neurology positions are available each year. The Vascular Neurology fellowship offered at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Neurology, in partnership with Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Miami is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program in which fellows acquire in depth knowledge of diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and overall management of all types of cerebrovascular disorders, and includes rotations through the stroke inpatient service, stroke ambulatory clinics, Neurosonology Laboratory, Neurocritical Care Unit, Neurointerventional and Neuroradiology services. Devoted time for research is an essential part of this program. An additional Stroke Research Fellowship position, funded by the Miami Stroke Regional Coordinating Centers for the NIH Stroke Network, offers a rich environment for fellows to develop translational stroke research skills, will afford support in mentored-career development, and accelerate a pathway to an academic career.
