Sleep Medicine Division

The Sleep Medicine Research Program seeks to understand the causes, determinants and consequences of sleep disorders. The research team research projects are funded by the National Institutes of Health and Industry sponsored research. Our research strives to improve patient care through cutting edge diagnosis and treatments in sleep disorders, improve access to health care and provide research education and mentoring to students, residents and fellows.

Ongoing Research Projects

1.Principal Investigator-Alberto Ramos, M.D., MSPH
Exploring Sleep in Neurocognitive Aging and Alzheimer’s Research (eSANAR)
Sponsor: National Institutes of Aging-National Institutes of Health
Dates of Study: August 2017-May 2019

The study explores sleep phenotypes (i.e. sleep apnea) and early neurocognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in Latinos. This study addresses an important health disparity in middle-aged and older Latinos, an at-risk population for MCI/AD with a large burden of vascular disease.

Arrhythmia Detection In Obstructive Sleep apnea (ADIOS)
Sponsor: Boehringer Ingelheim.
Dates of Study: May 2016-April 2018

The goal of the study is to evaluate cardiac arrhythmias and use anticoagulants as a novel therapy for stroke prevention in patients with newly diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea.

The effects of cannabinoids on traumatic brain injury

To evaluate the effects of cannabinoids on patients with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury, including the effect of cannabinoids on sleep duration, sleep continuity, insomnia symptoms and daytime sleepiness.
