Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program

We appreciate your interest in our fellowship program. Established in 2014, our ACGME accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program at Jackson Health System/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine offers a well-rounded clinical training experience in hospice and palliative medicine, caring for a diverse patient population under the mentorship of experienced, board certified faculty.

Fellows are exposed to all sectors of healthcare system throughout the fellowship. Our participating institutions include:

  1. Jackson Memorial Hospital, a large urban university-affiliated teaching hospital
  2. Holtz Children’s Hospital, the pediatric hospital within the Jackson Health System
  3. the Miami VA Medical Center; and
  4. the University of Miami Health System (UHealth) comprising of
    1. University of Miami Hospital and Clinics
    2. UHealth Tower (formerly University of Miami Hospital)
    3. Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
    All conveniently located in walking distance within the health district.
  5. Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, the largest for-profit community hospice agency in South Florida, supports our educational endeavor since the beginning and provides venues for educational experience in home hospice care setting.

Rotations are structured and balanced encompassing various clinical settings inpatient hospice arid palliative care unit management, inpatient palliative care consultation, outpatient longitudinal palliative care clinic, home hospice care, long term care, and pediatric hospital.

In addition to a rich clinical experience, fellows will have a wide variety of specialty and subspecialty elective options including pain medicine and interventional pain service, physical medicine and rehabilitation, hematology and oncology with various site disease groups, cancer supportive services, radiation oncology, and heart transplant program.

Fellows will learn to conduct domain-based, comprehensive, whole-person assessment and to provide goal-directed, individualized treatment and care plan recommendations.

Our palliative care team works closely and collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members including social workers, rehabilitation and recreational therapists, chaplains, and volunteers to achieve the best possible clinical outcomes for our patients and families. Fellows will learn to engage and work effectively with the interdisciplinary team in all settings as well as to provide recommendations on care plan development, care coordination and care transition.

Our fertile academic environment is very conducive to conduct clinical and education research projects and offers excellent opportunities for various scholarly activities to promote career development.

In 2018-2019 academic year, we added “pediatric track” to our program. Two-year “combined geriatric and palliative medicine fellowship track” starts in 2019-2020 academic year with the goals of developing leaders and scholars in the fields of geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine.
