Infectious Diseases Division

With our division’s groundbreaking state-recognized injection drug related initiatives, the Infectious Diseases Division is able to meet people where they are and successfully reduce the number of infections related to injection drug use. Our faculty continue to be leaders in the development of innovative measures for preventing, treating, and caring for this high risk population.

SUD/Syringe Infection Prevention
The Infectious Diseases Division participates in multiple studies to assess the safety and efficacy of pioneering SUD/Syringe preventative interventions for at-risk individuals. The following is a list of ongoing awards by divisional faculty.
1. Gilead NOVA Mobile delivery of PrEP at a Syringe Services Program is a pilot study focused on the delivery of Descovy for PrEP to 100 people who inject drugs at the IDEA Syringe Services Program.

2. Gilead FOCUS is a trial implementation of routine HIV/HCV screening at a Syringe Services Program in the Miami-Dade area.

SUD/Syringe Infection Treatment
The Infectious Diseases Division participates in multiple studies to assess the safety and efficacy of pioneering SUD/Syringe treatment interventions for at-risk individuals. The following is a list of ongoing awards by divisional faculty.
1. Tele-Harm Reduction for Rapid Initiation of Antiretrovirals in People who Inject Drugs: A Randomized Controlled Trial seeks to engage persons who inject drugs (PWID) into HIV care by bringing healthcare out of the traditional healthcare system and leveraging syringe services programs as trusted venues to deliver telehealth-enhanced access to antiretrovirals, medications for opioid use disorder, and hepatitis C cure.

2. Integrated Care and Treatment for Severe Infectious Diseases and Substance Use Disorders (SUD) among Hospitalized Patients

3. Gilead Rapid Initiation of ART among People Who Inject Drugs studies the rapid initiation of antiretroviral therapy for 50 people who inject drugs living with HIV at the IDEA Syringe Services Program.
