A Message from the Vice Chair for Education
Welcome to Department of Medicine at the Miller School of Medicine! As Vice Chair for Education, I have the privilege of overseeing the work our department does across the medical education spectrum; from medical student training (Undergraduate Medical Education) to resident/fellow training (Graduate Medical Education) to lifelong learning (Continuing Medical Education), we are very proud of our department’s involvement in our medical school and health system.
The Department of Medicine provides the largest contribution to teaching across the 4-year medical school curriculum; our faculty provide on-the-ground teaching at all levels of medical school, and many of the senior leadership positions in Medical Education at the Miller School are held by faculty in our department. In the innovative NextGenMD curriculum launched in 2020, our department plays an instrumental role in developing the health care leaders of tomorrow by empowering them to transform lives and inspiring them to serve our global community.
At the graduate training level, we have robust and nationally recognized training programs in Internal Medicine and most medical subspecialties in collaboration with Jackson Health System. Our trainees play an integral role in caring for the diverse populations at the University of Miami Health System (UHealth), Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center, and several partner institutions. Our busy clinical service lines allow the residents and fellows to excel in the clinical arena, but they also are very engaged in the research and teaching missions of the Miller School. In addition, we have primary care-focused Internal Medicine residency programs and select fellowships at Holy Cross Hospital in Broward County and JFK Medical Center in Palm Beach County.
We also stress the importance of continuous learning for all physicians. Our Department of Medicine Grand Rounds series showcases internationally-renowned researchers, educators, and clinicians from the University of Miami and across the globe; to provide the greatest opportunity for participation, these sessions can be viewed traditionally but also through livestream and in enduring format. We provide CME for this series as well as Maintenance of Certification points with the American Board of Internal Medicine. In addition, each of our divisions delivers additional specialty-specific content for practicing health care professionals.
