Seeking patient care?
The University of Miami/Jackson Health System Geriatric Medicine (Internal Medicine) Fellowship Program is under the auspices of Jackson Memorial Hospital, an accredited, non-profit, tertiary care hospital and the major teaching facility for the University of Miami, Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. We are a very well established and solid academic program that has been graduating geriatricians for over 35 years. Our Geriatric Medicine (Internal Medicine) Fellowship Program trains fellows in preparation for achieving board certification as a geriatric medicine practitioner and educator/researcher. The program emphasizes broad clinical exposure, scholarship, self-instruction, development of critical analysis of clinical problems and the ability to consult in complex biological, psychological and social aspects of geriatric assessment and management. Our holistic approach integrates faculty from the entire spectrum of academic disciplines. This dedicated team of professionals works in pursuit of training internal medicine or family medicine physicians to be:
- Competent and compassionate geriatricians who employ strategies for life-long learning.
- Culturally competent geriatricians who care for ethnically and socio-economically diverse populations.
- Geriatric medicine teachers who educate multidisciplinary trainees to practice culturally appropriate geriatric care.
- Geriatricians who practice interprofessional care leadership in diverse practice settings.
- Geriatric leaders in the development and delivery of evidence-based care models and population health.
Our fellows’ clinical rotations take place at multiple sites and include:
- Jackson Memorial Hospital – Palliative Care & Hospice

In addition to clinical experiences, we offer a robust didactic curriculum that include:
- Gerimmersion: A 32-hour, hands-on introduction to Geriatric Medicine
- Geriatric Evidence-Based Literature Review (bi-weekly)
- Frailty Seminar Series (monthly)
- Case Presentations (weekly)
- Geriatric Medicine Core Curriculum (weekly)
- Geriatric Medicine Board Review (bi-weekly)
We also offer robust research opportunities for our fellows, as the Bruce W. Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center houses the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), one of 20 VA Centers of Excellence in aging, longevity and geriatric research. There are multiple opportunities to pursue research in basic science, clinical, translational and health services research. Our main area of focus is frailty. Research mentors in various topics are based at the VA GRECC.
Our fellows and faculty are highly diverse by every standard and we assume ownership of the issue of diversity in fellows' recruitment, selection, and retention and raise awareness of unconscious bias. We constantly make deliberate efforts to retain and recruit fellows and faculty from diverse backgrounds to better serve our diverse patient population in South Florida.
In summary, we strive to elucidate and apply the biopsychosocial aging model in training physicians to improve health, independence and quality of life for older persons ranging from highly functional to frail. We achieve these goals through understanding, applying, teaching, innovating, and promulgating interdisciplinary approaches to the problems of the older person in the modern world.
