Over the last five years our division has grown by 50% to meet the ever-changing demands of infectious diseases prevention, treatment, and care. Through vibrant and integrated Infectious Diseases Fellowships and mentoring programs, we are educating the infectious disease physicians and researchers of tomorrow.
Under the careful mentorship of nationally and internationally recognized faculty with expertise in basic science and clinical research encompassing HIV/AIDS and its co-morbidities, Hepatitis C, tuberculosis, healthcare-associated infections, genitourinary infections, transplant and oncologic complications, and travel-related illnesses, physicians are exposed to leading areas of research in the field of infectious diseases.
By recruiting top talent and fostering strong leadership roles in antimicrobial stewardship, infectious control, and patient safety at the University of Miami and partnering hospitals, our faculty guides future physicians and researchers toward a vibrant career with education and training opportunities in the United States, Columbia, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Brazil.
Message from the chief
Welcome to the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami!
Miami, with its unique geography, culture, and large tertiary-care medical centers provides exceptional opportunities for innovation in infectious disease clinical practice, research, and learning.
Our ID Division Faculty provide inpatient and outpatient clinical care, including specialized services for HIV treatment and prevention, infections associated with solid organ and stem cell transplant, and epidemiology, infection control, and antimicrobial stewardship at the University of Miami Hospital, Sylvester Cancer Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Miami VA Medical Center. We also provide innovative community-centered care outside of traditional hospital clinics through partnerships with community-based organizations, mobile clinics, and neighborhood locations for our services.
Our faculty research portfolio is guided by the infections and issues that most impact the communities we serve. Our major research foci are HIV treatment and prevention (including pre-exposure prophylaxis, rapid entry into HIV care, and syringe exchange programs), COVID-19 prevention and treatment, antimicrobial stewardship and infection control (including multidrug-resistant infection treatment and prevention) and transplant-associated infections. We maintain several clinical trials research units closely associated with our clinical and community-based operations to facilitate engagement in cutting-edge research.
Our close collaborations with the NIH-funded Miami Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), Center for HIV Research in Mental Health (CHARM), and the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) as well as with the Florida Department of Health allow synergies with scientists and public health professionals across multiple disciplines. Frequent conferences and symposia provide an energizing academic environment for our ID clinical faculty and fellows.
