Dr. Kerman’s Research Overview
An associate professor of Clinical Medicine with clinical interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and recurrent C. Difficile colitis. He completed a medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston. His postdoctoral training includes an internship, residency in Internal Medicine at Rush University in Chicago, IL, followed by a year as Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine at Rush. He completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2008. Upon completion of his fellowship, he joined the faculty at the University of Miami.
Dr. Kerman is actively involved in numerous clinical research efforts at the University. He is the Principal Investigator in a number of industry-sponsored trials for those patients that have failed conventional therapy in IBD. Additionally, Dr. Kerman directs the university’s bi-monthly Inflammatory Bowel Disease Conference where gastroenterologists, pathologists, surgeons, radiologists, and internationally renowned experts discuss difficult patient cases and give updates on innovative clinical and basic research efforts both locally, nationally, and worldwide.
Dr. Kerman also performs a novel therapeutic technique for the difficult problem of recurrent clostridium difficile infection. Recurrent C difficile colitis has emerged as a leading cause of hospital-acquired illness and places a tremendous burden on our health care system. Patients that have had more than 2 recurrences despite medical therapy with antibiotics are candidates for Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT). This therapy has resulted in successful resolution of symptoms in over 90% of patients undergoing the procedure. While FMT is still an experimental procedure, the FDA allows for patients to have this done strictly for this indication. The University has available pre-screened donor stool at a minimal cost to the patient in those cases where donors are unavailable.
