The program is known by the name Dr. Elaine Tozman, a renowned clinician-educator, a person who embodies many of the core values of academic medicine: hard work, excellence in patient care, and dedication to teaching. The program welcomes internal medicine residents interested in exploring academic rheumatology and offers personalized mentorship. All scholars gather with other faculty members monthly in addition to our one-on-one primary meetings. Our meetings are a venue to review projects, present research in progress, and prepare for presentations. Our goal is to publish and present in local, national, and international meetings. We plan to expand these activities to include clinical discussions and welcome visiting scholars.
Program leader
Dr. Maria Fernanda Carpintero, a Faculty member in the division of rheumatology, leads the Tozman Scholars Program.
Junior scholars
We invite all residents who express an interest in exploring academic rheumatology. There are five UM/Jackson and five UM/Holy Cross residents participating right now. The residents are talented, energetic, and diverse. They all receive a copy of a book to guide them through academic medicine: Not Discussed: - the unspoken rules for a career in academic medical research by Stein, C. Michael. They are encouraged to submit grants to attend the ACR and other societal meetings.
