A Message from The Chief

Mikkael A. Sekeres

In the Division of Hematology, we specialize in the care of patients with disorders of the blood and bone marrow. This includes cancers such as leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, clonal hematopoiesis, and bone marrow failure disorders; and non-cancerous bleeding and clotting conditions, factor deficiencies, hemoglobinopathies, and other abnormalities of the blood and bone marrow components.

Our faculty are internationally recognized for their expertise in caring for patients with common and rare hematologic conditions, and are leaders in the education of students, trainees, colleagues, and patients. They are frequently invited to lecture nationally and internationally, and have authored U.S. and worldwide guidelines on the treatment of blood and bone marrow disorders. Our highly selective, nationally regarded Hematology-Oncology fellowship training program is ACGME accredited and places fellows in academic positions throughout the country.

Moreover, our faculty conduct the innovative clinical, basic, and translational research today that will become the standards of care, and define the biology of hematologic disorders, in the future. They have over 2030 scientific publications, have written several books and articles in widely read media, and have won prestigious government and society research grants.

In addition, at any given time we have over 150 clinical therapeutic trials available to meet the needs of our patients, including investigator initiated, National Cancer Institute cooperative group, and corporate sponsored studies, in all trial phases. We are proud to have led or participated in multiple trials of new drugs that have subsequently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and to have helped pioneer new treatment approaches, including immunotherapy, monoclonal antibodies and checkpoint inhibitors, recombinant technology, and novel drug combinations.

Research conducted by Division of Hematology faculty also includes defining the genetics and epigenetics of hematologic diagnoses; identifying the biologic basis of drug efficacy and drug resistance; applying bioinformatics to diagnostics and therapeutics; uncovering the epidemiology of hematologic disorders; and focusing on quality of life and outcomes of patients with hematologic conditions.

State-of-the-art multidisciplinary care is delivered by our faculty, who collaborate with highly specialized advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers. Our guiding principle is to treat patients as we would want our own families to be treated.

We provide that care in both inpatient and outpatient settings at University of Miami Hospital and Clinics (UMHC) at 9 sites in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, where we have specialty Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Classical Hematology inpatient units, and at Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH). Our staff also see patients in our outpatient facilities, including our comprehensive treatment unit, which operates 7 days a week at the UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and at our other outpatient clinics and infusion centers located throughout South Florida, including Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, Hollywood, Plantation, Kendall, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale and Coral Gables (Lennar).

The Division is an integral part of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) basic, clinical and translational research efforts. Most faculty members also participate in formal scientific research programs at the NCI-designated University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our Division collaborates closely with colleagues in the Division of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, providing state of the art expertise in the use of autologous, allogeneic or cord blood stem cell transplantation, and cellular therapies such as CAR-T cell therapies.

We encourage you to learn more about our faculty, innovative clinical services, research and education programs, and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center by visiting https://umiamihealth.org/sylvester-comprehensive-cancer-center.
