Goals and Objectives

Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Division

The Fellowship Training Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is of two years’ duration. Satisfactory completion of the Fellowship Training Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism will make trainee eligible to take the examination of the corresponding Subspecialty Board.

Goals

  • To provide opportunity for the trainee to learn the relevant biochemistry, physiology and physiopathology of the endocrine system and thus of endocrine disease.
  • To learn the fundamental information as well as the practical steps to be taken for the diagnosis and management of endocrine disease.
  • To become proficient in the techniques required of a consultant in this field.
  • To develop progressively the clinical skills expected of a consultant in endocrinology.
  • To become skilled and experienced in ethical, cost‐effective endocrine practice.
  • To maintain empathy respect and concern for their patients’ physical, psychological, and emotional comfort.
  • To be able to evaluate critically published material relevant to endocrinology.
  • To be exposed, through participation to, clinical and basic research, and the presentation of data and their interpretation.

Objectives

  • Training in the diagnosis and management of endocrine disease, emphasizing history and physical exam of the optic fundi, thyroid, breasts, penis, testes, female reproductive system, neurological exam, and feet.
  • Selection and interpretation of endocrine tests and imaging procedures such as ultra‐sonography, radionuclide scans, computerized axial, and positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance.
  • Becoming facile in fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid gland and interpretation of the cytology.
  • Understanding the pharmaco‐therapy of endocrine disease and the role of surgery, radiation and the use of radioisotopes.
