Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program
In addition to general hematology, the Division provides specialized training in medical oncology with a focus on lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloid cancers, as well as in classical hematology, including inherited disorders and coagulopathies. Fellows also have opportunities for advanced training in stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. Clinical rotations offer broad exposure to hematologic and oncologic diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings at the NCI-designated Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Hospital, and Jackson Memorial Hospital. Fellows interested in becoming physician-scientists may pursue laboratory training with distinguished faculty in the Divisions of Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, as well as with numerous affiliated faculty engaged in basic, translational, epidemiologic, cancer control, and clinical research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Program Overview
Our ACGME-accredited program combines comprehensive clinical rotations with protected time for research, electives, and scholarly activities tailored to each fellow’s career goals. Fellows gain exposure to advanced clinical techniques, innovative therapies, and the management of complex hematologic disorders.
For fellows interested in academic research, the Physician-Scientist Training Pathway provides extended time for laboratory or translational research while integrating advanced clinical training. Graduates are well-prepared for academic faculty positions, clinical leadership roles, or specialized careers in hematology and oncology.
Clinical Training
Fellows rotate through a broad spectrum of malignant and classical hematology experiences, including stem cell transplantation, cellular therapies, and specialized hematologic disorders. Training occurs in both inpatient and outpatient settings, offering comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of hematologic practice.
A distinctive feature of the program is the continuity clinic, where fellows manage longitudinal patient care under attending supervision, developing independence and clinical responsibility while building a foundation for long-term practice in hematology.
Education & Mentorship
Educational offerings include structured lectures, case-based conferences, and multidisciplinary tumor boards, ensuring fellows develop both clinical expertise and scholarly skills. Each fellow is paired with a dedicated faculty advisor who guides rotation planning, monitors progress, facilitates mentorship matches, and supports career development in clinical practice, research, and education.
