Seeking patient care?
In 2014, the ACGME accredited the newly formed Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program at Jackson Health System/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. This fellowship offers a well-rounded clinical training experience in hospice and palliative medicine. Fellows care for a diverse patient population under the mentorship of experienced board certified faculty. The participating institutions are all conveniently located in Miami’s Health District and include: Jackson Memorial Hospital, Holtz Children’s Hospital (the pediatric hospital for the Jackson Health System), the Miami VA Medical Center, the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics which houses the Vitas Innovative Hospice Care Unit, and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Rotations are structured to include a range of clinical care experiences: inpatient hospice and palliative care unit management, inpatient palliative care consultation, outpatient palliative care clinic, home hospice care, long-term care, specialized cancer care, and pediatric hospital and home care. In addition to these required clinical experience, fellows will have opportunities to participate in a variety of elective options in the specialties of pain medicine/interventional pain, hematology and oncology, supportive and integrative cancer care, radiation oncology, and heart transplantation.
Fellows will learn to conduct domain-based, comprehensive, patient-centered assessments and provide goal-directed, individualized treatment recommendations and comprehensive care plans. Our hospice and palliative care interdisciplinary team includes faculty and fellows working closely and collaboratively with social workers, rehabilitation and recreational therapists, chaplains and volunteers to achieve the best clinical outcomes for our patients and families. As team members, fellows will learn to work effectively in all clinical settings to assure highly collaborative care coordination and error-free care transitions.
Our multi-institutional medical center environment promotes scholarly clinical and educational research activity that leads to new discoveries and offers excellent opportunities for professional growth and academic career development.
