General Internal Medicine Division

Undergraduate and Graduate Education

Undergraduate

Faculty in the division are heavily involved in all aspects of medical student education, in both the MD and MD/MPH programs and on both Miller School campuses. Faculty engage in teaching throughout all four years in a wide variety of formats and in a wide spectrum of courses through lectures, small group discussions, problem-based learning, role playing, and simulations. Most division faculty teach on both the inpatient service and clinics as inpatient ward attendings and/or clinic preceptors for medical students. Many faculty serve as directors of various courses or longitudinal themes including our Clinical Skills program, Doctoring course, Ethics theme, the third year Medicine clerkships, the Generalist Primary Care clerkship, the Medicine Sub-internships, and various Senior electives, including Professional Development, Transitions-to-Residency, and Quality Improvement electives. Division faculty direct the Michael S. Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education, the Educational Development Office and oversee Competency Assessment throughout all 4 years of medical student development as well as Program Assessment. Division members provide a great deal of student advising through various venues including the Clinical Skills Faculty Mentor program, Learning Communities, and dean advising. Lastly, several division members comprise much of the leadership of medical education at the Miller School serving as medical education deans overseeing all aspects of undergraduate medical education.

Graduate

GIM faculty play key roles in educating the Department of Medicine’s residents. Division members serve as Associate Residency Program Directors, research mentors, and clinical educators both in the outpatient and inpatient settings. We staff the residency program’s continuity clinics at both Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics. All categorical medicine residents work with our attendings in the Jackson clinic during their medical ambulatory rotations. Division faculty are active in providing didactic education to our residents. Our General Internal Medicine Grand Rounds occurs on the second Tuesday of each month and is a required noon conference for the residents. Our Residency Scholarly Activity Program includes a series of didactic lectures on epidemiology, biostatistics, and other topics pertaining to medical research. Several division members serve as research mentors to residents and many of faculty are also involved in mentoring resident Quality Improvement Projects. In the inpatient setting GIM faculty staff two inpatient teaching teams at Jackson Memorial Hospital and we all cover some inpatient teaching rotations at University of Miami Hospital and Clinics.
