About Us

We have faculty in every division who focus on both clinical and translational research with very strong programs in Cancer, Crohn’s and Colitis, Cystic Fibrosis, Chronic Lung Disease, Diabetes, Kidney and Vascular Disease and HIV/AIDS. Faculty are members of research centers including Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute (ISCI), Schiff Center for Liver Disease, Katz Center for Renal Disease, Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI), Gordon Center for Innovation in Education and they play a key role in productive interdisciplinary research efforts within the School of Medicine. The DOM has $36M in federal research awards, and is ranked among academic departments across the country.

Diversity in the Department of Medicine is a major priority as we seek to build a workforce that reflects the racial and ethnic makeup of the patients that we serve. The Department is highly active in promoting diversity, community based research and understanding toward eliminating health care disparities. We are national leaders in studying the barriers to healthcare in Hispanic populations especially from Latin America and the Carribbean. Along with our pipeline programs for training students, housestaff this has allowed the department to recruit among the largest faculty of Hispanic descent.

The Department of Medicine is very active in medical education throughout the continuum, from pre-medical studies to continuing medical education.  Learners have the opportunity to train across a wide spectrum of practice locations and patient populations throughout South Florida.  Our Department’s faculty has extensive leadership roles at the medical school and health system in key educational programs, and our faculty routinely wins awards for teaching levels at the local, regional, and national levels.

The clinical mission of the Department of Medicine encompasses both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. Our clinical program includes Jackson Memorial Hospital, the third largest teaching hospital in the United States, with over 1550 inpatient beds and allows the Department to provide care to the most underserved populations. In addition the 560-bed facility University of Miami Hospital and Clinics is the region’s first university-owned, multi-specialty, acute care hospital and the flagship facility of UHealth – University of Miami Health System. With 560 private rooms, UMH provides patients with personalized treatment in a high-quality environment. The Bruce W. Carter Veterans Administration Medical Center has more than 400 beds, of which 81 are acute medical beds including Cardiac and Medical Intensive Care Units.

The Department of Medicine admits approximately 10,000 patients to its inpatient services and sees nearly 250,000 patients in its ambulatory care clinics each year. Each Division in the Department of Medicine has its own subspecialty clinic and consultation service and we are innovators in perioperative management of surgical patients.
