Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Division

Improving the care of older adults…

Research activities are supported by an on-going 23-year federally-funded Center of Excellence at the Miami Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) and extramurally funded activities at the UM Clinical Research Building and Rosenstiel Science Medical Building.

Our division has made major advances to improve the care of older adults through innovations and discovery in bone and joint diseases, prostate cancer, diabetes, and cardio-metabolic disorders. We have advanced the longstanding translational research on the “Healthy Bones – Healthy Body” hypothesis and expanded research into the Veterans Affairs (VA) genomics initiative with the Million Veterans Program (MVP), E-health, clinical decision support and comparative effectiveness, thereby contributing in major ways to a more effective and efficient patient-centered team approach to care for the elderly, fostering collaborative teams with academic partners and the community. We are also emphasizing prevention and healthy aging with the implementation of strategies to improve the quality of life and reduce the burden of disability, frailty, falls, and other geriatrics syndromes in the diverse populations of south Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Division has an extremely strong and successful partnership with the Miami VA Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) to support interdisciplinary basic and translational research.
