Innovative Cardiovascular Training and Research

Department of Medicine

A rich learning environment for future heart care leaders

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Miller School of Medicine offers a rigorous program that combines education, research, clinical experience, and an array of supplemental experiences, including simulation training and educational conferences. Trainees get a diverse clinical experience at three health systems — University of Miami Health System, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Miami VA. And, residents and post-doctoral students can take part in basic, translational, and clinical research.

Yiannis S. Chatzizisis, M.D., Ph.D.We provide a rich learning experience that goes well beyond general requirements. We create niche experiences for trainees to discover their strengths and individual interests by exploring a wide array of cardiology subspecialty areas. Additionally, our division works collaboratively with cardiac and thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, endocrinology, oncology, radiology, and neurology — among others — to bring a multispecialty approach to clinical innovation and problem-solving.

We are involved in innovative technology, therapies, and diagnostics that allow us to provide state-of-the-art care and discover better ways to care for our patients today and in the future. Clinical innovation is critical to our growth and development — and to enhancing care for our patients. It includes simple solutions, such as considering new ways to implement routine practices or using existing therapies in a novel way. We offer an environment that encourages innovation and discovery.

Our diverse faculty is committed to academic education, research, and clinical excellence — the foundation that will help the next generation of cardiac specialists find their passion and become leaders. Trainees have opportunities to explore their interests with support and guidance for personal development and achievement.
