Message from the Executive Dean

Dear Students,

Latha Chandran, MD, MPH

I am delighted to welcome you to explore the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and its outstanding educational, clinical, research, and community activities. The Miller School is the oldest medical school in the state of Florida. We offer a diverse array of educational programs for medical students, such as the medical scientist training program (M.D. Ph.D.), an accelerated three-year pathway for M.D. students, a M.D./JD, and multiple four-year combined degree programs such as M.D./M.P.H., M.D./M.B.A. and M.D./M.S. in genomic medicine.

Our clinical services are internationally renowned — Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been ranked number one in the nation for many years, our Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (an NCI-designated center for cancer care) serves many patients from our community and we have many other luminary programs in cardiology, ENT, gastroenterology, neurosciences, orthopaedics, urology and several other specialties. Our close-knit relationships with Jackson Memorial Health System, the Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center, and many area hospitals and community health centers allow incredible opportunities for learning, outside of our own UHealth system. Research activities are widespread across the campus.  Students will find it easy to be a part of an outstanding research lab and be involved in exciting scientific discoveries that change the world.

Our engagement in community health really sets us apart. Our students consistently rate their experiences working in our local communities for curricular and service activities as an exciting part of their training at the Miller School.  Almost all our students participate in community engagement activities through the Wolfson DOCS program. We are delighted to be an integral part of a great university and health system that focuses on social accountability. One of the five goals of our health system is to continue the development and implementation of an innovative health care delivery platform that provides high-value care, access, and engagement, and addresses our local communities’ most pressing health needs. This is truly a commitment to the health care needs of our local community.

I invite you to explore all that we have to offer as an exceptional center of higher learning in Miami. Come down and enjoy the sunshine.
