Students in the joint J.D. /M.D. program must complete the following
Required health law courses
- Administrative Law (4 credits)
- Health Law and Policy (3 credits)
Each student will be assigned an advisor who will offer recommendations on other law courses as well as law courses which are co-listed in the Miller School of Medicine. These courses may include selections from the following:
- Alternate Dispute Resolution (3 credits)
- Bio-Medical Ethics (1 credit)
- Business Associations (4 credits)
- Children and Youth Law Workshop (2 credits)
- Elder Law (3 credits)
- Family Law (3 credits)
- Federal Income Tax (4 credits)
- Finance and Regulation of Health Care
- Health Care and the Constitution (3 credits)
- Health Law Policy and Practice Practicum (3 credits)
- Insurance Law and Policy (2 credits)
- New Directions in Lawyering (3 credits)
- Professional Liability and Malpractice (3 credits)
- Scientific Evidence: In Theory and In Court (2 credits)
Credits from Medical School coursework
- 6 credits will come from a Year 5 core clerkship (clerkships are either 6 medical school credits (6 weeks) or 8 medical school credits (8 weeks), and include areas such as Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine and Primary Care. The clerkships are 50 hrs/week of contact time and include exams.
- 5 credits will come from coursework related (as much as possible) to legal topics and must include the medical-legal clinic listed below:
- Medical-Legal Clinic (being proposed as two-week 2-credit or four-week 4-credit sessions). This is a clinical course co-listed in the Law School and the Medical School. JD/ MD students will take it as a Medical School course.
- The Concept of a Hospital (2-3 credits). This will be taken spring of Year 6 as a Medical School elective. It is co-listed in multiple Schools/Departments.
- The Medical School will permit a 1-2 credit research/independent study course to be taken at the Law School as an elective option.
JD/MD students must have any modifications to their course curriculum (as defined above) approved by the joint program advisor.
