Welcome
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM) provides clinical externships (electives) at Jackson Memorial Hospital (and other clinical sites) for students enrolled in medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and osteopathic schools that participate in VSLO. However, medical students at the UMMSM are given first priority for all rotations. Non-UMMSM students may participate in electives only if space is available. Only students who have completed required course prerequisites and are in good standing in their own medical schools will be accepted. Students of international medical schools are not accepted for clinical externships.
The University of Miami School of Medicine permits a maximum visit of 12 weeks.
Specific departments and divisions may have specific requirements. Contact them directly for further information.-

Courses
Students interested in visiting rotations should review the VSLO site for available course offerings. A full description of the UMMSM curriculum is available at: https://bulletin.miami.edu/graduate-academic-programs/medicine/md/#curriculumtext. Course types available for visiting students include:
Sub-Internship: The sub-internship (sub-I) experience is intended to provide a learning experience for the students that prepares them to serve as competent interns and effective members of an interdisciplinary team. All sub-internships are expected to provide an opportunity for students to learn and demonstrate competency in core objectives. The sub-internship is a 4 week inpatient experience.
Advanced Clinical Selective: The student will be given the opportunity to exercise critical clinical thinking and patient care skills (e.g., diagnosis, prognosis, and management) while under the direct supervision of attending physicians and senior residents/fellows. The attending and resident physicians will model the principles and commitments of a physician’s professional life. Students will follow the care of assigned patients with the responsible physician. The students must be able to work up and manage the medical or surgical care of selected patients under the supervision of residents and attending physicians. This may include both outpatient and inpatient experiences and is 4 weeks in duration.
Elective: Elective rotations are 2 weeks in duration and the student will be given the opportunity to exercise critical clinical thinking and patient care skills (e.g. diagnosis, prognosis, and management) while under the direct supervision of attending physicians and senior residents/fellows. Students will follow the care of assigned patients with the responsible physician. The students must be able to work up and manage the medical or surgical care of selected patients under the supervision of residents and attending physicians. This may include both outpatient and inpatient experiences.
