Description: The pathway is focused on developing skills to collaborate with local communities to develop research, healthcare delivery strategies, and advocacy initiatives that support improved health outcomes. Through scholarship and other innovative, nontraditional approaches, including exposure to non-clinic based care delivery, learners will be introduced to health challenges in our local region and cutting-edge community engaged approaches to address key underlying conditions that result in chronic diseases and other health conditions. A major focus is to improve health for those with increased risk and vulnerable populations. This includes addressing non-medical factors that affect a person's health, well-being, and quality of life. Students will be urged to conduct challenging projects in areas which traditional heath care delivery and research and may not be adequately addressing. Such projects will be designed to ensure that All populations are being adequately served. This includes fair and just opportunity for All people to achieve their highest level of health, regardless of their social, economic, or geographic circumstances. Prior areas have included delivering care in resource-poor settings, health and development economics, health as a human right, socio-cultural influences on health outcomes and sexual/reproductive health issues. The pathway goals will be met through didactic coursework, both required and elective; experiential learning; and self-learning activities, both conventional and web-based learning.
