Doctor of the Future

Pathways

Directors: Dr. Azizi Seixas and Dr. Mairead Moloney
Description: The Doctor of the Future: AI, Innovation, and Health Informatics Pathway is designed for medical students who aspire to become transformative leaders in healthcare through digital technology and computational thinking. Whether your goal is to become a Chief Innovation Officer, Chief Digital Officer, incorporate cutting-edge technology into your daily clinical practice, or launch your own health tech startup, this pathway will equip you with the tools, mentorship, and industry experience needed to shape the future of medicine. Students will gain foundational and applied skills in biomedical informatics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital health innovation through hands-on laboratories, modular coursework built on FAIR data principles, and mentored research projects. The pathway leverages UM's ecosystem of digital tools, cloud-based platforms, and strategic collaborations with the UM Library, Engineering, Business, and Informatics to support students in creating, evaluating, and implementing technology-enabled solutions. Through structured didactics, real-world problem-solving experiences, and an industry apprenticeship program, students will develop fluency in AI, big data, clinical decision support systems, and health IT management, preparing them to lead the intersection of clinical medicine, data science, and healthcare innovation.
