Description: The Business of Medicine, Quality Improvement, and Patient Safety Pathway will help students to broaden their knowledge of the healthcare system and provide them with the skills and strategies needed to facilitate change within this structure. To prepare students to become transformative leaders, students should have a basic understanding of their role in the team of healthcare professionals within the framework of our healthcare system. As such, this course aims to provide students with a better understanding of how health care disciplines outside of medicine (such as nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, etc.) as well as business, administration, and public health fields, interact. One method of learning this cross-disciplinary intersection is through familiarizing oneself with the basics of quality improvement as it applies to health care. Students will expand their learning environment beyond the typical classroom and clinical settings in order to complete a practical, relevant QI project working in collaboration with health care administrators, allied health professionals, and interdisciplinary teams, ranging from business professionals to industrial engineers.
