“Pathology should form the basis of every physician’s thinking about the patient” wrote founding chair of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Dr. W.A.D. Anderson, in the first edition of his comprehensive reference textbook “Anderson’s Pathology” in 1948. These words reflect the integral role that pathology plays in healthcare and continue to represent the foundation of the department’s mission today.

A diverse world class faculty providing subspecialty-based clinical service, is the foundation of excellence in patient care that is the keystone of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. Within the UHealth hospitals (UHealth Tower, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute), UHealth clinics, and Jackson Health System and clinics, the department oversees the processing of over seventeen million laboratory tests and 70,000 anatomic pathology samples. In addition, the Pathology Reference Services processes several thousand consultations each year.

We believe that pathology forms a bridge between basic and translational research regardless of scientific discipline. Our department boasts internationally recognized leaders in the study of HIV/SIV, a Nobel Prize winner studying the role of hormones in the pathology and therapy of cancer, and an ever-growing team of well-funded researchers and physician-scientists.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, transparency, and fairness are our culture, are championed by Merce Jorda, M.D., Ph.D. M.B.A., Professor and Joseph R. Coulter, Jr. Chair. She believes that health system integration, innovation, and advancements in service, education, quality, and research are strategic elements that position pathology in the center of healthcare.
