Intraoperative Consultations

Division of Anatomic Pathology

Recommendations for immediate patient treatment are the primary goal of the Intraoperative Consultation Service (ICS) in addition to providing fast and accurate specimen dissection, margin evaluation, and diagnostic interpretation. The ICS provides state-of-the-art frozen section diagnostic services for all UHealth and Jackson Health System hospitals and off-campus medical centers; over 2000 frozen sections are evaluated annually in this busy service.

The ICS service delivers 24-hour, 7-day a week coverage and includes all of the expert faculty covering surgical pathology. The ICS is constructed so the covering resident or fellow has the opportunity to evaluate the gross specimen, select the appropriate area(s) requiring frozen section, freeze, cut, stain, and interpret the slide before being reviewed by the faculty member covering the service – it is an excellent opportunity to learn frozen section pathology in a high pressure but supportive environment. The resident or fellow also has the opportunity to learn laboratory management as they oversee the ramping up or down of assistant laboratory personnel as needed, based on the quantity and complexity of the specimens. Always available is immediate faculty support.
