History

The Founding Chair was Dr. W.A.D. Anderson, author of the respected and comprehensive “Anderson’s Pathology” and “Synopsis of Pathology” texts that were key references for pathologists and textbooks for medical students and residents for over 30 years during the early stage of the practice of modern pathology.  While the textbooks, which were translated in over a dozen languages, were Dr. Anderson’s legacy, he was a remarkable pathologist and administrator who led the department for 19 years and built an integrated program based on service, education, and research.

Dr. Anderson was succeeded by Dr. Azorides Morales - an exceptional leader and pathologist.  Dr. Morales expanded the range of the department’s activities, enhanced a strong residency program, and led both the department and many facets of the school until his retirement in 2007.  During his impressive 33-year tenure, Dr. Morales elevated the clinical service and education program to the international level and invented many technical advances in tissue processing.

Dr. Mehrdad Nadji, internationally recognized pathologist and leader in the development of immunohistochemistry, educator, and professor, served as interim Chair in 2008. Dr. Nadji continues to serve as Departmental Senior Advisor.

Dr. Richard Cote, an innovative physician scientist and entrepreneur, served as chair for 8 years. He was the founding director of the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Biomedical Nanotechnology Institute.

Dr. Merce Jorda was named Chair of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in 2020.  As a member of the faculty for over 20 years, Dr. Jorda is a strong proponent of pathology and laboratory medicine being central to an integrated health care system and has created and promoted a responsive administration that underpins the department’s mission of excellence in clinical service, education, and research.
