The mission within the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital is to provide many academic opportunities necessary to train long-term leaders committed to be excellent and successful pathologists. We embrace having diverse trainees with different backgrounds where all of them respect each other and everyone is allowed to demonstrate their potential to the fullest. We offer an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program, either a combined AP/CP program or exclusive training in AP or CP, and eleven different subspecialties for clinical fellowship. In our department research is an important component of our training and education.
The program utilizes the facilities of Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital, the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Veterans’ Affairs Hospital and the Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office. Each year, the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine signs out approximately 400 autopsies; 45,000 surgical specimens; more than 15,000 consults cases, 35,000 cytology examinations, and over 8,000,000 laboratory tests yearly, spanning the entire spectrum of diseases, from bread-and-butter to once-in-a lifetime diagnosis. This high-volume of cases helps our residents and fellows to acquire the knowledge and confidence to develop independent thinkers and highly effective members of health care. The educational experience includes a year-long system-based didactic sessions, problem-based microscopic conferences, resident-presented cases conferences and journal clubs and tumor boards, with our faculty integrally involved in teaching residents, fellows and medical students.
