Application Process

Each year, the Department of Pathology has five PGY-1 openings. We accept first-year applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

We strongly recommend submitting all applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) system earliest as possible. Letters of recommendations, Dean's Letters, medical school transcripts, USMLE transcripts, Dean's letter, and other supporting credentials from you must be submitted through ERAS.

What should I expect on my interview day?
All interviews are held at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Hospital. We interview on Mondays and Wednesdays via zoom (mid-October through mid-December). Alternative days and individual interviews also are available, as we recognize that arranging a time for your residency interview may be difficult.
- 1:00-1:35 pm: Welcome Introduction with Dr. Jorda (Chair of the Department), Dr. Carmen Gomez (Vice Chair of Education) and Dr. Andre Pinto (Program Director).
- 1:40-3:55 pm: Individual interviews with faculty and chief/senior resident. 15 minute break included during this time frame.
- 3:55-4:00 pm: Wrap up session with Dr. Andre Pinto and Dr. Carmen Gomez
Which visa does the Department sponsor?

Candidates should hold a valid ECGMG certificate prior to receiving an interview invitation. J1 visas are sponsored; H1 visas are not sponsored. You may obtain information concerning US visas through the Jackson Memorial Hospital House staff office.
Do we have a minimum USMLE score required?

No, we do not have a minimum requirement above the passing level.
Are reference letters being over a year old valid?

Three letters of recommendation dated for the current year are necessary. These should be from individuals who have observed your work skills recently and who can speak to your ability to communicate in English and to write independently.
Do the residents have enough interaction with faculty?

All our faculty work very closely with the residents. Although we encourage the residents to acquired skills on managing the cases that allow them to be confident and independent, all our trainees are highly supervised and taught by faculty during the daily sign out, also all our trainees have the opportunity to attend teaching conferences in all branches of diagnostic pathology and being mentored by staff in research projects and presentations.
Any information about the duty hours?

The workday generally starts at 7:30 am. Pathology residents take an at-home call (pager call) from 5:00 pm until 8:00 am the following morning. In general, on-call occurs no more than every 6 days and every 10 weekends. Resident duty hours are monitored weekly to ensure compliance with ACGME regulations.
