Our ACGME-accredited Hematopathology fellowship offers two one-year positions, designed to provide advanced in-depth training in academic Hematopathology.

Our fellows are exposed to a high volume of clinical cases from three major institutions, including an NCI-designated multidisciplinary cancer center (Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center), a large tertiary hospital (Jackson Memorial Hospital), and a large private hospital and clinic health system (University of Miami Hospital and clinics). When combined, our services review approximately 10,000 samples per year including leukemias, lymphomas, flow cytometry, and molecular assays. The fellows work closely alongside residents from our AP/CP training program and our faculty and are responsible for handling our high volume and clinically complex bone marrow and lymphoma services and private consultation cases. Our fellows present all hematopathology-related multidisciplinary tumor boards and are academically productive.

History

The Fellowship in Hematopathology at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital was founded by Dr. Gerald E. Byrne Jr. Dr. Byrne was himself one of the Nation‘s first fellows in Hematopathology, completing his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago under the mentorship of the world-renowned Hematopathologist Dr. Henry Rappaport. Dr. Byrne joined the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1975 and over the next >35 years provided instruction and guidance to countless trainees and faculty while building the beginnings of the thriving consult practice and fellowship program in hematopathology that our trainees still enjoy and benefit from to this day. As we strive to honor his legacy, we continue our work in what has grown to be a high-volume and high complexity fully integrated academic clinical practice in South Florida. Our practice is characterized by both routine and complex clinical cases from a wide and unique patient demographic. With an emphasis on strong, integrated reporting to optimize patient care, our attending pathologists work intimately with our fellows each and every day to expand their knowledge of the ever-changing field of hematopathology, hone their diagnostic skills, and emphasize publication to further the specialty. This standard of excellence has persisted over the years and has carried over into the practices of our prior graduates, all of whom currently hold positions practicing hematopathology across the globe and many of whom are active in an academic setting, including several of our attendings here at the University of Miami. Our faculty and graduates maintain a unique bond, akin to that of a family, and we look forward to welcoming you into ours!

Curriculum

The fellows will rotate 21 weeks each on the bone marrow service and lymphoma service. Flow cytometry and molecular genetic testing done in bone marrow and lymphoma clinical cases are reviewed and interpreted as part of the service work. In addition, the fellows will experience two weeks each in the laboratories of flow cytometry/cytogenetics/molecular pathology, two weeks on coagulation, and two weeks of elective time. Protected research time can be provided in scheduled blocks, or by protected hours throughout the academic year.
