Basic research forms the foundation of any successful pathology department. The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine hosts a growing and dynamic research program with more than $8 million dollars in awards.

Led by Dr. Ronald Desrosiers, an internationally recognized leader in SIV/HIV investigations, the Division of Basic Research boasts a diversity of research scientists performing not only fundamental work but also bridging the gap between basic and translational research.   Unifying with the mission of the department, Drs. Emmanuel Thomas and Oliver McDonald work to address questions in liver and gastrointestinal diseases and cancers. Nobel prize winner Dr. Andrew Schally heads a distinguished research program examining the role and use of hormones in a variety of tissue-based cancers. Together with the Translational Research Division, the faculty of the Division of Basic Research are available to advise and collaborate with clinical research and physician-scientist training.
