The Division of Hematopathology at the University of Miami directs diagnostic laboratory testing and provides histopathologic diagnoses for all patients with hematopoietic neoplasms at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC/UMHC), University of Miami Hospital (UMH) Jackson Health System (JHS), and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (BPEI).
We provide all diagnostic interpretations in hematopoietic lesions oversee the operation, quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance of 4 distinct CLIA certified labs within UHealth/JHS. Our clinical services include histology, flow cytometry immunophenotyping, cytogenetic and molecular analysis for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. Our division works closely with the Division of Hematology-Oncology, our NCI designated cancer center and the Oncology Service Line of SCCC to provide fully integrated and high-quality patient diagnoses that support patient care, enhance clinical trial participation, and improve accuracy of therapeutic decision making at UHealth and JHS. Diagnostic services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days-a-week.
Division faculty include seven academic, board-certified hematopathologists committed to excellence in patient care, education and translational research. The division of hematopathology is dynamic, and characterized by it’s collaborative, innovative, and productive nature. We participate actively in weekly lymphoma and leukemia multidisciplinary tumor boards and host regular case consensus conferences, journal club, and didactic sessions. The division houses a comprehensive teaching collection and the faculty receive an array of outside consults, invitations to lecture regionally, nationally, and internationally, and publish in prestigious hematopathology journals. Our research efforts are primarily focused on viral-associated lymphomas, immune responses, tumor microenvironment and immunodeficiency states, and ancillary diagnostics, particularly flow cytometry immunophenotyping, minimal residual disease, and molecular studies.
Our division offers a highly competitive one-year fellowship for two individuals annually. The fellows learn to hone their diagnostic skills and refine interpretative judgement through exposure to deductive and inductive reasoning while working through cases with faculty. These exposures range from “on the spot” urgent consultations from clinicians to routine daily sign outs.
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine offers a Fellowship in Hematopathology.
