Our non-accredited Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology fellowship offers 1 clinical position, designed to provide advanced in-depth training in Bone and Soft Tissue pathology.

The fellow reviews cases from three major institutions, including a multidisciplinary cancer center (Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center), a large tertiary hospital (Jackson Memorial Hospital) and several private hospitals (University of Miami Hospital and other primary care satellite clinics) and the private consultation cases of Drs. Rosenberg and Montgomery. The fellow works closely alongside the residents from our AP/CP training program and is responsible for all consultation cases, many in-house specimens, and participation in the two weekly multidisciplinary tumor boards. There are no direct grossing responsibilities (except for resident and PA supervision and guidance). It is expected that the fellow will participate in and complete translational research projects that will result in publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

History

Our fellowship program has been active since 2019 and reflects the unique combination of an NCI-designated cancer center paired with one of the largest county hospitals in the country. There is a rich, learning-friendly environment with an immense variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic cases. The multidisciplinary team includes very experienced surgeons, radiologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists.

Curriculum

The fellow will dedicate 10 months to the BST service and has a 1-month elective and 1-month vacation. The fellow will have the opportunity to review cases with the skeletal radiologists. The case mix includes those from in-house operations, slides from patients operated on elsewhere, and the personal consultations of Drs. Rosenberg and Montgomery. There are over 24,000 archived consultations from around the world that include digital copies of all the relevant paperwork. Also available for review are large study sets. The fellow will be expected to begin sign-out daily at 8:00 AM, prepare bi-monthly journal club and there is a daily personal consultation/interesting case slide review conference with Drs. Rosenberg and Montgomery. It is expected that the fellow will participate in the academic activities of the Pathology Department including, Grand Rounds and residents’ conferences.

Goals

To acquire comprehensive knowledge and experience of the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal diseases to provide appropriate and effective care. To gain the ability to accurately diagnose all neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the musculoskeletal system. To have the trainee exposed to state-of-the-art research techniques and be supported in their research projects and scholarly activities. To teach trainees to be effective educators, and become effective members and leaders of healthcare teams, and acquire the skills for life-long learning.

Application

Our fellowship program will participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for the 2026-27 academic year. Prospective applicants are encouraged to take note of the important dates and deadlines:

  • January 2025: Programs start interviewing
  • February 5, 2025: Match opens for registration to programs and applicants
  • March 12, 2025: Ranking opens
  • April 16, 2025: Rank order list certification deadline
  • April 30, 2025: Match Day
  • July 2026: Start of fellowship

Applicants must be Board eligible or certified in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology or Anatomic Pathology.
