Division of Anatomic Pathology

The Head and Neck Pathology Service is dedicated to the provision of diagnostic services for both benign conditions and malignancies of the head and neck.

This subdivision is led by Dr. Carmen Gomez-Fernandez. Dr. Gomez is a tenured Professor of Pathology and Vice-Chair of Education & Graduate Mentorship program. Board-certified in Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology, she has over 20 years of experience in diagnostic pathology with focused expertise in cytopathology and breast and head and neck surgical pathology. She also serves as the Director of the Breast Pathology Service.

Our team offers expertise in the pathology of an array of routine and complex cases of the oral cavity, larynx, oropharynx, Sinonasal tract, salivary gland, and thyroid, and evaluates over 2800 in-house and consult cases annually. Our specialized diagnostic services dedicated to the diagnosis and management of head and neck pathology include:

  • Morphologic interpretation of tissue biopsies
  • Immunohistochemical evaluation of oral cavity, oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, laryngeal, sino nasal, salivary gland, and thyroid tumors
  • Molecular assays for HPV and EBV
  • Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for detection of genetic alterations
  • Molecular analysis of thyroid tumors including detection of BRAF V600E and RET/PTC
  • Consultation/second opinion on complex cases

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine offers a Fellowship in Head & Neck Pathology.
