The program, in collaboration with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, is designed to provide advanced in-depth training in Pediatric & Neonatal Pathology. The fellow will have the opportunity to join a busy service with cases ranging from simple surgical specimens to highly complex resections. In addition, our program provides extensive exposure to Neonatal and Pediatric autopsy cases as well as pediatric gastrointestinal diseases and neoplastic processes. The fellow works closely with the residents and observers and actively participates in their educational curriculum. The fellow also participates in numerous combined conferences including several mortality-morbidity presentations in collaboration with a robust neonatology service. The fellow will have several opportunities to engage in collaborative research projects.
History
Our fellowship program was established several years ago and has a history of training pediatric pathologists. The graduates of this program have established themselves as leaders in their respective institutions. Our program provides a robust education-friendly environment.
Curriculum
The fellowship consists of 10 months dedicated to Pediatric & Perinatal Pathology with one month of elective rotation and one month vacation. Pediatric & Perinatal Pathology is divided between Jackson Memorial Hospital/Holtz Children’s Hospital and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. The fellow may rotate up to 6 months at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital depending on her/his areas of interest. The service handle about 7500 specimens/year and about 60 pediatric autopsies with additional 4500 specimens at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The fellow is expected to begin sign-out at 8:00 AM, preview the cases the day before, and prepare a monthly journal club.
Goals
To acquire in-depth knowledge and expertise on the pathophysiology of Pediatric & Perinatal diseases and formulate a comprehensive pathology report. The Pediatric & Perinatal Pathology service is considered an integral component of the pediatric care at our institution and the fellow is anticipated to adopt and nurture this culture.
