Cytogenetics

Division of Laboratory Medicine
The Cytogenetics Laboratory is a key ancillary testing component of the Divisions of Hematopathology and Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology and oversees cytogenetic testing for the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as accepting consultation cases.
Cytogenetic approaches to studying chromosomes and their relationship to disease provides key diagnostic and prognostic information in hematologic malignancies, soft-tissue tumors, targeted cancer treatment, and developmental disorders. The laboratory offers comprehensive testing including karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and molecular based tests. The primary test menu also includes mutation detection by PCR/sequencing for EGFR, KRAS, BRAF, MGMT, TERT, PIK3CA, IDH1 and IDH2 mutations, MGMT methylation for different types of cancers and HER2 FISH testing for breast and gastric cancers.  Approximately 8000 tests are performed annually.
