Our combined AP/CP residency program is arranged in a mixed model where residents alternate between AP and CP rotations throughout their four-year program. We are the only subspecialized academic department in South Florida, which creates a rich learning environment and exceptional educational opportunities.
The AP training program includes rotations in autopsy pathology, cytopathology, forensic pathology and subspecialty surgical pathology organized according to specific organ systems including breast, dermatopathology, endocrine, GYN, GI, GU, head and neck, liver/pancreas, neuropathology, pediatric pathology and renal pathology. The AP resident training Program includes rotations in clinical chemistry, cytogenetics, hematology/flow cytometry, hematopathology, laboratory medicine/information systems, medical microbiology, molecular biology, special coagulation, blood banking/transfusion medicine. Included in these rotations are experiences in special techniques such as flow cytometry, molecular biology, laboratory management and medical informatics.
We also offer a maximum of 6 months of elective time which can be spent in areas chosen by the resident; including research, additional time in core specialties, faculty personal consults and outside rotations (upon approval from the program director and GME Office).
The educational experience also includes a two-year-long, systems-based didactic sessions, problem-based microscopic conferences, resident-presented cases conferences and journal clubs and tumor boards. The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine stresses active involvement with the clinical staff in patient care, along with participation in intra- and interdepartmental conferences, medical student teaching, and research.
