The BST faculty are highly experienced diagnosticians, as well as fully committed to academic missions in teaching, research, and publication. They are involved in and support collaborative clinical and translational research within the other departmental subspecialties, as well as serving as members of the Sylvester Cancer Center and the Sarcoma Site Disease Group. The BST service attracts thousands of national and international consultations that serve as a resource for education and research.
The BST is directed by Dr. Andrew Rosenberg, a surgical pathologist with expertise in the pathobiology of diseases and neoplasms of the musculoskeletal system. His primary focus is the surgical pathology of the bone and soft tissue pathology where the volume of tumors from the university and consultation practice is challenging. This experience has provided the materials for Dr. Rosenberg to be able to teach pathologists, orthopedic surgeons, and medical and radiation oncologists and to publish over 300 articles and 60 chapters, and several books focusing on bone tumors and sarcomas of the musculoskeletal system. The BST service houses a repository of almost 25,000 cases teaching slide collection material in bone and soft tissue pathology gathered for over 30 years that is available to all postgraduate trainees and faculty members. The BST faculty believe firmly in teamwork, excellence in communication, mutual respect, diversity, and the fostering of intellectual curiosity in a nurturing and highly supportive environment. The faculty have an international network and are active in helping residents matriculate to excellent fellowship programs and graduating fellows obtain excellent employment opportunities.
