Cytopathology Certification

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is spearheading a crucial initiative to elevate Cytopathology standards internationally. In collaboration with the Fundación Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud (FUCS) in Colombia, we are proud to present a comprehensive program designed to provide 130 hours of immersive training in Spanish. This program, utilizing both virtual and in-person formats, encompasses topics in gynecological and non-gynecological cytology.

Our primary objective is to impart advanced expertise in Cytopathology across diverse practice settings.  Practical tips for managing cytologic samples, discussions on standardized cytology reporting systems, and diagnostic pearls will be shared.  The experienced faculty from the DPLM will guide participants through evidence-based and expert opinion approaches to cytological diagnosis and management, addressing challenging cases in gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens such as thyroid, lymph node, lung, salivary gland, pancreas, urine, and more. The course will also prepare students for the International Academy of Cytology exam.

The educational activities encompass live virtual didactic lectures, recorded for independent learning, in-person didactic sessions, virtual slide reviews for self-paced learning and assessment, and engaging case-based discussions and review sessions with faculty. This immersive training experience ensures direct interactions with faculty possessing expertise in Cytopathology, as well as dedicated cytotechnology instructors.

The meticulous organization of this program is overseen by Dr. Garcia-Buitrago and Ms. Adriana Zanaty, Senior Manager of Pathology Education Programs, alongside a dedicated team from FUCS: Dr. Sergio Parra, graduate of the Universidad del Rosario, who is currently Rector of the School of Medicine at FUCS, Mr. Martin Poveda, graduate of the Cyto-histotechnology program at FUCS and the Biomedical Engineering program at Universidad ECCI, who serves as the Dean of the School of Health Technologies at FUCS, and Mrs. Ivonne Soler, graduate of the Cyto-histotechnology program at FUCS and the Occupational Health program at the University of Tolima, who serves as instructor in the Cyto-histotechnology program.

We are committed to enhancing Cytopathology proficiency globally and believe that this collaborative initiative will play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.
