Thank you for your interest in the University of Miami/ Jackson Health System Pathology Residency Training Program.

Our program is committed to provide our trainees with in-depth training in anatomic and clinical pathology. The diverse patient population covered by our three major institutions, including the largest county hospital in the country (Jackson Health System), an NCI-designated cancer center (Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center) and a private health system (UHealth), generates a unique and challenging wealth of pathologic specimens. Together, the three-hospital system has approximately 50,000 surgical specimens, 35,000 cytology examinations, and over 8,000,000 laboratory tests yearly.

Our department offers a subspecialty-based training in all areas of pathology, with renowned experts in the field. The residents also benefit from our large number of fellows who offer guidance and teaching in almost every area of surgical pathology.

The program’s curriculum has been recently redesigned to offer daily didactic sessions, weekly (“unknowns”) microscopic sessions, and a variety of intradepartmental meeting and lectures. We aim to create a rich learning environment with progressive milestones and responsibilities. Our incoming residents are initially paired with senior trainees through a “buddy system”, to ensure proper supervision and progressive independent activities. As the field of pathology evolves, we also immerse our trainees in digitalization and ensure that our residents are always “ahead of the game”.

There are substantial opportunities for clinical and translational research, which is facilitated by our leadership through small intradepartmental grants. The residents are also encouraged to participate in national and international meetings.

We are proud of our mission, vision and values, and we welcome you to our UM/JHS family of physicians.

Sincerely,

Andre Pinto, M.D.
