The medical student training program is for medical students at the University of Miami (and select others) who are interested in child health and development. This training program is designed to allow medical students the opportunity to explore their interests in child development and well-being.

Like all trainees at the Mailman Center, medical students participate in the LEND (Leadership Development in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) curriculum, a federally funded interprofessional training program based on family professional partnerships. During their LEND experience, medical students will join a group of interdisciplinary trainees from 12 other disciplines such as pediatric medicine (residents), psychology, nursing, social work, speech and language pathology, and family members/people with disabilities. LEND training emphasizes building inter-professional team skills, family-professional partnerships, and cultural humility when working with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and/or special healthcare needs and their families. Trainees also complete an independent scholarly project demonstrating leadership development and systems-level change for the pediatric population.

The Mailman Center’s Medical Student Training Program serves as a “Pathway of Emphasis” for University of Miami Miller School of Medicine MD students and is required of MD-MPH students doing their capstone with Mailman Center faculty.
